Prominent Hill Mine

11kV, 2 x ±16Mvar

OZ Minerals has used RXHK STATCOM Technology on two of it’s underground mining sites in South Australia, including Prominent Hill. Both mines are near to BHP Olympic Dam with similar network challenges.

• Existing copper mine undergoing expansion
• Based on Carrapateena supply performance, RXHK was asked to supply 2 x 16Mvar STATCOMs with 2 x overload (2s)
• STATCOMs to control 132kV voltage (~50MW load including 25MW of large liquid resistor induction motor starters) during normal operation and mill start scenarios.
• First Statcom delivered to site April ‘20, second delivered in June ‘20. Installation by client.
• RXHK also supplied dual-redundant Master controller to provide overall reactive power control and voltage control replacing the existing AMSC scheme.
• Due to COVID-19 restrictions units were commissioned remotely during September ‘20
